At your level, not somebody else’s

The level is a real constraint on the text rather than a label on it. The same article at two rungs is genuinely two different pieces of writing — and you can change your mind halfway and have it done again.

Every word carries its reading

Tone-marked pinyin over every word.

  • Every word carries tone-marked pinyin, so you are never guessing at a tone you have not met.
  • The first ten lessons are about sound before script — the letters, the four tones, the tones that change, and why a language with four hundred syllables ended up writing in characters.
  • HSK 1 to HSK 5 ship with three extra example sentences per word, already in the app. HSK 6 and HSK 7–9 have the word list and one example each.

What comes in the box

All of this ships inside the app. It works offline, signed out, and before you have added a key — because none of it is fetched from anywhere.

101

Lessons

Short explainers, from the script up to a real news sentence, with 384 example sentences — every word tappable, every sentence speakable.

10,538

Words to practise

A graded catalogue covering every rung, so there is something to practise from the first minute on a fresh install.

7,329

Example sentences

Three further examples for each word, revealed free on the first press — no model call, no signal needed.

The Fill the gap practice game, with a sentence missing one word and four options to choose from.

And then practise it, for nothing

Five games built from the words you have looked up and the sentences already on your phone. Not one of them calls a model.

  • Get a word wrong and it is due again immediately; right, and it goes away for longer each time.
  • Your device’s own voice reads every word and sentence, so audio costs nothing either.
  • It all works with the aeroplane mode switch on.

About Chinese (Simplified) in Soya

Which HSK levels does Soya cover?

All seven rungs: HSK 1 through HSK 6, plus HSK 7–9 as a single advanced band. The level is a real constraint on the text, not a label — the same article at HSK 2 and HSK 5 comes back as genuinely two different texts.

Is the pinyin shown over every word?

Yes, tone-marked, above the word in the way furigana sits over kanji. Tap a word and you get its meaning, the original-language word, and spoken pronunciation.

Does it teach Traditional characters too?

Traditional Chinese is a separate choice in Soya rather than a conversion pass over Simplified — it has its own lessons, its own Taiwanese vocabulary and its own definitions. You pick one in Settings.

Learning Chinese (Traditional) instead? It is a separate choice in Soya, with its own lessons and its own definitions — and one library holds both.

Start with something you wanted to read anyway.
