Terms of use
These terms apply to the Soya app and this website.
Soya turns things you want to read into reading practice. These terms are the short version of what that means in both directions. By using the app you accept them; if you do not, do not use it.
The free allowance
Soya works with no account and no API key by running the translation on our own keys, up to 300,000 words of output per person per calendar month, resetting on the 1st. That allowance is offered in good faith and is not a purchase: we may change the figure, or stop offering it, if the cost of providing it stops being sustainable. You will not be charged for it, and there is nothing to cancel.
Everything already on your phone keeps working regardless — what you have imported, the words you have looked up, every lesson, and every practice game. None of those depend on us.
Using your own key
If you add an API key for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, DeepSeek or another OpenAI-compatible endpoint, the app sends requests from your device straight to that provider. Your relationship for those requests is with them: their terms apply, they bill you, and we are not party to it. The figures the app shows you are our estimate of what you have spent, not a bill, and the provider's own accounting is the one that counts.
What the text is, and is not
Translations, definitions, sentence breakdowns and book summaries are produced by a language model. They can be wrong. A book summary is written from the model's memory of the book rather than from the book, and the app labels it as such. Treat all of it as practice material, not as a reference: do not rely on it for anything where being wrong would matter, and check anything that does.
What you import
You choose what to put into Soya. Please only import things you are entitled to read, and respect the terms of the sites you take them from. What you import is for your own reading practice — the app keeps it on your device and does not publish, share or redistribute it.
The shared News corpus is different: those are short stories gathered and translated once for everybody, and they are ours to provide rather than yours to redistribute.
Acceptable use
Do not use the free tier to translate at industrial scale, to resell what it produces, or to work around the monthly allowance with multiple installs. It exists so that somebody can install the app and read something without first setting up an account with a model provider. That is all it is for.
No warranty
Soya is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be available, uninterrupted, or free of errors. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from using it — including loss of data, which is why Settings › Backup exists and is worth using.
Ending it
Delete the app whenever you like; nothing has to be cancelled. If you signed in,Settings › Account › Delete account removes everything held for you, immediately. We may suspend access to the free tier where it is being used in the ways described under acceptable use.
Changes
If these terms change materially, the app will say so rather than quietly substituting a new page. Continuing to use Soya after that means the new terms apply.
